Alpe Adria Gravel TransAlp 2026

Embark on a 5-day gravel bike adventure with professional guide Martin Budweiser across three countries to the dramatic Adriatic cliff coastline. We combine mountains, lakes, remote valleys, culinary delights, and a unique gravel experience through Austria, Slovenia, and Italy over 305 km with 4,500 meters of elevation gain.

What makes this adventure truly special is the daily landscape change. Starting with Carinthian lakes and the Nock Mountains, we reach the limestone giants of Triglav National Park, and cross the forests of Kolovrat into the lush wine and hill country of Collio, concluding with a ride through the Karst near Grignano on the Adriatic cliffs.

Experience quality over quantity with a maximum of 10 participants, led by a certified gravel guide, and enjoy excellent all-around service—our hallmark.

Route

Stage 1 – Along and over turquoise lakes
The tour begins quite leisurely with a warm-up ride to the southern shore of Lake Millstatt. Next, you'll tackle the ascent toward Lake Weißensee, totaling around 700 meters of elevation gain. The subsequent boat trip across the turquoise waters of Weißensee offers relaxation, enjoyment, and is certainly a highlight of the day. Upon arrival in Techendorf, we'll pedal uphill once more to Kreuzberg before descending through idyllic scenery to the day's endpoint in Hermagor.

Stage 2 – The First Border Crossing

The day begins gently again. We ride along the Gail River for 20 kilometers downstream to Feistritz. A few kilometers later, we are already in Italy, where we visit the old train station in Tarvis before tackling the main ascent of the tour. Just before the Passo Predil, the highest point of the Gravel Alpe-Adria, Lake Predil invites us to take a short break. A dip in the cool waters provides refreshment and a literal cool-down. Upon reaching the pass, we enter Slovenia. The final descent drops 700 meters in elevation over nearly 20 kilometers, ending in the town center of Bovec.

Stage 3 – The Soča Valley – Unique and Impressive

The third stage is all about the Soca River. Its turquoise waters accompany us throughout the day. The most adventurous section of the Soca, between Bovec and Kobarid, attracts water sports enthusiasts and cyclists alike to this stunning valley. A somewhat rugged trail segment will require our focus—possibly pushing our bikes for a few meters. After capturing the obligatory photos at the famous Napoleon Bridge, we continue following the Soca to Tolmin and reach our day's destination in Ciginj.

Stage 4 – Across the Border into Italy’s Vineyards
We follow the Soca for about 10 km before ascending toward Kombreško. At a fountain, we refill our water supplies, then ride downhill to the border river between Slovenia and Italy, "Idrija" or "Judrio." We frequently cross back and forth between the two countries, ultimately choosing Italy. In Prepotto, we arrive at the renowned wine region of Collio ("Brda" on the Slovenian side). There might even be time for a wine tasting on the way to Gorizia.

Stage 5 – The Karst, Traces of World War I, and Swaying Boats in the Harbor
After a short warm-up, we start the final day with the climb to Monte San Michele, offering a glimpse into the region’s dark past. Cannons and trenches remind us of the tragic years of World War I. However, this summit also has its positive side – it’s where we first catch sight of the Adriatic Sea, the destination of our journey. The varied descent takes us to Lago di Doberdo and further into the Karst mountains north of the Adriatic. The rolling terrain once again tests our strength and endurance before we finally reach our goal: the picturesque harbor of Grignano, right by the sea.

We offer this tour exclusively guided, as simply following GPS tracks is not always the ideal solution. Only with a guide and support vehicle can we respond to challenges, accommodate participants' wishes, and ensure a high-quality experience. The route may change frequently since certain paths can be impassable when wet, or riding at high altitudes may be unsuitable in cold weather. Environmental conditions can also lead to route modifications and adjustments in distance and elevation.

With conviction—your guide Martin and mastermind Hannes :)
